Nice Up Winni Beach

Nice Up the Walls, Jamaica, its the passion and brainchildof Louis Masai Michel. This is only first stage of the project, which is toeventually build an art school for the yuts in Jamaica. Looking back, thisproject seemed to be rushed from the beginning. I'm not sure we evenbelieved our self that we can pull it off so soon as we did, it looked morelike years ahead. I guess when we stumbled on the Crowdfunder site it sparkeda little hope. Even though we didn't reach the funding goal, it helped uslaunch it and give us a way to showcase our ideas more professionally. Thefeedback from everyone convinced us to continue in this direction. Somehow,with the tightest budget you can imagine, with rent to catch up on still, wegot enough for flights, accommodations, food, transport and...more paint?!

We had our first minor defeat at Gatwick airport beforeboarding, we got taken down underneath the plane to check the content of ourbags. As you can guess it was the most important part of the whole project, andthey confiscated our cans. You live and learn, so sortout any paperwork and get it documented, don't fall for someone called a"manager", double confirming over phone that it is acceptable tobring a bunch of flammable cans on board. I felt Masai was royally pissed offwhere we stood, but i couldn't help but laugh. I wasn't about to stay behindwatching that flight go, wasting all our efforts, so we figured out quickly weshould still get on the flight. We just had to use what ever medium and toolswe find out there, only fair I think to use what resources Jamaicans alreadyuse.

Enough said, before we left we managed to get in touch withJack Scorpio's daughter Tashima, which showed great interest and similarvisions as to what this project could do. She passed us on to Jack, whichhelped with accommodation when we stayedin Kingston. He also took us to Rebel Salute Festival, with an amazing line upwith artist such as, Tony Rebel, Queen Ifrica, Luciano, Capleton, TaurrusRiley, Stephen Marley and Romain Virgo. Also Damian Marley showed up at theend, along with three other shows we ended up seeing during our stay. It was afull on Rastafestival in St.Elizabeth going on until the sunrise, beautiful people, colors,vibrations, and a non-alchol event which gave a whole different and morepositive vibe.

Over the years, he has found and has worked in close association with many artists who today are now deemed as top performers in the industry, including Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Kiprich,Richie Stephens, Capleton, Mega Banton, Lady G, Shabba Ranks, Frankie Paul, Shaggy,Gentleman, Sean Paul, Barrington Levy, Yellow Man, Dennis Brown to name just a few. Winnifred Beach Piece

First spot we hit up with some splashes of house paint and brushes was Winnifred Beach, the last public beach left in the area. Before we left, we contacted Carla at Drapers San Guesthouse, 10-15min from PortAntonio, which gave us a tiny discount towards painting on thebeach to help their cause. Checkout their appeal of Free Winnifred Beach

Starting with thesmaller work was a good decision, as it made us get adjusted to work in theheat and with different materials. Compared to spray pieces it didn’t make much difference on how longit took, only that everyone came over wanting to talk tomade me take longer time. Especially the kids wouldn’t leave me alone, andthey were quite eager to help painting too. I needed an extra day because of my lack of concentration to finish thebeads and shoulders, so it took a total of 6-8hrs.

To our knowledge, no International artists have visited Jamaica since the recent Hurricane to use Street Art as a means of bringing colour, life and aesthetic remedies to the community.
This is the key objective that we wish to achieve with Nice Up The Walls.

Music Suite @ Youth Club

Adrian P. at St.Andrews Youth Club down in Westminster found me painting at the Freeze festival, and wanted something done for the youth clubs' music suite. It was a long and exhausting day but I enjoyed spending the day working for them, it's a really friendly and helpful bunch, Thank for the cuppa tea.

I painted on two canvases put together, and some small background details on the wall. I guess next step for me is to try and paint a bit smaller. Maybe I'll find a massive wall instead.

Here some pics from the process, and building a 6ft x 6ft canvas. Next time I get something already made and ready to go. A neighbor of West Bank Gallery spotted the piece I did outside there, and fell in love with it. I hope they found a big wall to put it on.

Good spot to have a look at some awesome snowboard & ski tricks, a lot of Norwegians representing!, well done! Made me miss home a bit after watching some short films of off piste in that lovely powder snow.

It helped standing next to the jumping bean burrito's mad bass, it kept the fumes bumping out of the cans. Ah, yeah, thank for lovely warm drinks from the Cake Hole, and the Chunky Chips was quite good too. Other artist painting was Data, Dan Kitchener, id-iom, Depecht and Pilot. Thanks to Upfest & Dephect for putting this together, and the massive crowd watching us paint. (please link us up if you find some photos)

Competition brief :

"Using any medium, demonstrate why you are one of the uniquely creative minds of tomorrow."

Here's my Artist Bio and my answer for The Ultimate question they had for us was this;

How would you use the £10,000 bursary to advance your creative career if you won the Competition?

The Big Dream is to travel via my art, collaborate with creative people and explore the endless possibilities. First stop will be Jamaica with a collective of artists, to create a strong collection of work on the walls and abandoned buildings, with Love from London to Jamaica. Secondly, to embark on a month’s art residency in Cape Town, South Africa, developing a fresh body of work, exploring local interaction and the way that, that effects my work. I am also in the midst of planning a trip to Norway collaborating with UK and Norwegian artists working our way through the country, “Chasing the Northern Light”.

My initial idea came from my painting ”The Rising Son”, which is based on the youths of Harlem, N.Y.

Merging old with new is something I find very intriguing. Introducing the New Era 59FIFTY cap with an old Victorian pre industrial crown gave it a fresh feel of the urban, street and contemporary culture. I see the crown as an item of hope, that you can be more than a king for a day.

A fascination for these mechanical elements which is being revealed to see the cogs in a system, brings forth a curiosity to figure out how things actually work. The sculpture represents mechanical slogs of everyday life;

“if you know how to orchestrate the mechanics

in your life, you can achieve anything.”

First time I've made something desent since primary school?! Well I guess I got to learn some new skills. Amasing what you can do with a tiny thread and needle. It might have kicked up some urge to make some fun sculptural characters I think. My mams used to make dolls before so might ask her for some tricks.

Louis' iPhone photos, I think I'll try and get hold of one of them for next year. He made his video in a day too, didn't get that far with trying to do it on a computer. He helped me film bits of it tho, soon up!

FINALE!

Final product from a fresh New Era 59FIFTY cap,

with a few new additional details added from a 1950s clock, a vintage lamp and a beaten up car-dashboard(found it in my street, already thrown away, ok)
It was put together with addicting fuming spraypaint, sown with tiny stingy needles & skinny almost invisible threads, stuck with sickening toxic glue, hammered, screwed and wired leaving me with bloody and bruised fingers. Hope you enjoy it, 'cause I'm glad it has left my house. XD

I found some inspirational photos from the streets of New York; "Harlem on the Verge", by photographer Alice Attie. Here's some details for you;

I call him the BlueKing tho, it is easier to remember, he is morphed with a lion;

"The symbolic meaning of lions, as one might imagine, primarily deals with strength.

The fact that it is a nocturnal creature means that the lion is a symbol of authority and command over subconscious thought (as night is an ancient symbol of the subconscious - or dream states).

It’s interesting that the lion is considered by many ancient cultures to be a solar animal symbol, however it is primarily a nocturnal creature, conducting its hunting activity mostly at night.

This serves as a symbolic message of balance and sound judgment. In that the lion shares the world of both night and day, the lion bears a message of prudence to us. In other words, the lion asks us to not overdo in certain areas of our lives. Rather, keep an even mind and an overall balance in our life activities. Other than a symbol for strength, other symbolic attributes of the lion include: Courage, Power, Royalty, Dignity, Authority, Dominion, Justice, Wisdom,Ferocity

Eros shines as a great Light—the Light of the Universe. As such he was known as Phanes (‘Brilliant’), the golden-winged god of light. He was also known as Ericapaeus (‘Power’), Logos ('Word' or ‘Wisdom’) and Metis (‘Intelligence’). The Romans called him Cupid.

Eros was the name given by the Orphic and Greek philosophers to the ‘First-born’ (Protogonus)—the first complete manifestation of Divinity. He was described mythologically as the son of Nyx (‘Night’- also known as Aether, the Holy Spirit, the divine Potential—the still, silent potential of all movement, sound, law and creativity.) and Boreas (‘North Wind’), who themselves were derived from Aether (‘Spirit’) and Erebus (‘Darkness’). Guess that is the worst shutter you could ever paint on, since its not much to paint on. It was full of tiny wholes, it was basically almost a perfect imprint on the plastic on the back in the end.

Story:

inspiration from a Japanese Pheonix Bantam rooster, decorative ornaments, mythology, symbolism, numerology and the chakra. It's a battle between the ego(solar plexus) and the true self, the machine is trying to control the earth, while the heart and throat is locked and separated not connecting the top chakra with the beautiful roots (feathers).

A phoenix has a colorful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet. (or purple, blue, and green according to some legends) "A mythical bird that never dies (rebirth), the phoenix flies far ahead to the front, always scanning the landscape and distant space. It represents our capacity for vision, for collecting sensory information about our environment and the events unfolding within it. I did a "quick" collage for both sides to show my design, easier than sketching it out over and over, and it helps to see how the colors,layout etc would work together. I will use my collage as reference to paint,spray paint and using mixed media. Artwork in the moodboard(right) you can find here:

"Paint Your Own Future"

Front: A working boy(1900s) with a soldiers hat and the constitutional flag in his pocket, walking up the steps to paint his own future (the stars). He has a tough look from living a hard life but determined to reach higher. Inspired by the industrial age, 1900s, Immigrant Dreams, arriving to New York and starting a new life of their own following their own Dreams and Stars.

Back: The modern boy also walks up, but rather use more modern tools by spraying his stars. Inspired by street culture, modern outfits (w jeans pants and cap).

Middle/Sides: The Machinery working behind the scenes, like a clock, the engine that also keep things moving forward. Inspired:Industrial age, machines.

Will use the collage as a reference for Painting with Gouache, Spray paint, mixed media.

Re Cycle London

New editions of one of the characters I did for london cycling competition last year. I finally had more time to spend on the background. I haven't thought much of how to use more collage for not just the characters, but to create their environment aswell. Some processes that should be very obvious to recognise is hard to spot when it's right in front of you, well I do get easily distracted and lost by other things. Finally, after a few sessions with Photoshop tutorials I've learnt a few usefuls bits an pieces just since end of December. I'm getting slightly addicted to theses tutorials, all this free tips and tricks, yes please!
Have put up some crops of the image so you can see more details, and a small collection of "Mad Hatters" following after. I found taking screenshots during certain processes helps me see what works or not, and also when it gives me ideas for what I can do for later use. I'll also post up some Pre and After (between?) shots too. It sort of reminds me of Looney Tunes, loved those cartoons tho.

Here's a new character design for you, and I have picked up a few new ways to render them digitally. I love watching and following these tutorials online. So much free 'education' out there, just go on an grab it! I've also put him in Adobe Flash, which is first time actually playing around with it. So the first animation I'll put out will be simple, almost like a Monthy Python'ish type of style to it. Open publication! Here's my illustrations for a featured editorial for The Scientist Magazine, US (magazine of the life sciences), October Issue. It's about insulin signaling, that may play a role in several complex diseases. The illustrations show how the insulin triggers certain functions inside cells. Took near two weeks to do.

I was lucky enough to put up some of my work under the Westway Bridge in Portobello, London the 11th of August. It was a lot of good stuff put up, check some of the links out:

I wish I had more time on this, and maybe that I was a bit more focused, but I managed to do this even though I was really ill that day. So can't complain I guess. Hope you like it, can't wait to more.

Out of the Box- Travelling tent, a commisson I finished last month. I will link it up when they have launched their website. I was asked to make an event/festival tent with a lot of characters including, singers, guitartist, cabaret acts, performers etc. I gave the entire tent wheels and a piano vehicle to transport it (music driven tent?). I added some drawn details for clothes and other elements to add something extra to the collages. Hope you like it, maybe I'll post some of the characters seperate later for you people to see. Falmouth Uni Degree Show

Final Roll

My Illustration Degree show, Falmouth University College, 2010. This character is one of many made for the AOI London Bicycling Competition. I printed out 8 A3 pages with different pieces of this character, and mounted them on foamboard. The hard part was to cut around all the edges, a little bit perfectionist sometimes but it turned out alright. I wish I had printed even bigger pieces of the rest of the work to balance it out, oh well. I also designed a little box he could have on his shoulders to have my business cards on. At the last minute I 'made' the table thing to put my portfolios and a little comment book on.

After making this dude on the bike I really want to see how my work looks when printed big, maybe I'll find out one day :)

I had to take a picture with all my work arranged and organised for the final assessement. It wasn't too many projects, but a lot of work.. 10-11 projects perhapse.

Anyways, had a lot of fun bringing the Bikedude home, I think he did too..

It's a special live performances from Spree, Liz Lawrence, Silverley Allen & Thirty Pounds of Bone at the Dartington Great Hall. It's a free event in end of June, made up of performances from alumni, current and postgraduate students from Dartington College of Arts.

I got this live poster brief last weekend, I managed to squeeze it in between writing a 7000 word report, organising work, mounting boards for the graduation show. I didn't have time to transfer it and add extra bits/textures, but they liked it like this anyways. I might test it out a bit later to see how it looks. I'm glad I did it eventhough I was full on finishing everything for assessment. And they might want me to work with them again, so it's all good.

Ok, I got to start somewhere. I really wanted to start it all with my sketchbooks and other drawings, and move from old until newer stuff. But I found you some I made this summer, it´s one in a small series of drawings I did in an old black and white animalbook (norwegian) I found this summer at Fretex. I was finally free do some collageing since it wasn´t part of any Uni work, yeah sometimes it can restrict me to be a bit more experimental. The collageing and drawing in this book is not really anything complicated, just testing out simple cut and paste to see what happens. Had to try to do some portraits too, to just remind myself that I could do it. Anyways, hope you like it;
